The Google Update is cutting down 40% of search results!

Google released a core search engine update in March 2024 and part of that update is to focus on a high-quality content. They predict that they will reduce search results of a low quality by up to 40% with this new algorithm update. Now you can join the dots here to see what kind of low-quality content they mean. Without saying it, it’s implied that AI-generated bland unhelpful content will be the first to go. So if your website is predominantly low quality content that doesn’t actually answer searchers’ questions or provide meaningful information using Google’s EEAT formula, then your SEO efforts will be a waste of time, and you won’t rank. ‘We’ve long had a policy against using automation to generate low-quality or unoriginal content at scale with the goal of manipulating search rankings. This policy was originally designed to address instances of content being generated at scale where it was clear that automation was involved. This is what Google said about automated content: … To better address these techniques, we’re strengthening our policy to focus on this abusive behavior — producing content at scale to boost search ranking — whether automation, humans or a combination are involved. This will allow us to take action on more types of content with little to no value created at scale, like pages that pretend to have answers to popular searches but fail to deliver helpful content.’ It’s not just your own content that will be reviewed and scrutinised but if you host third party guest posts or similar, that will also be taken into account. And you can’t afford to have even one poor piece of content on your site. You have until 5 May 2024 to change this. Take this opportunity to do a content audit of your site. ‘We’ll now consider very low-value, third-party content produced primarily for ranking purposes and without close oversight of a website owner to be spam,’ Google stated. As I repeat multiple times, the only way you can win with content when it comes to improving your Google ranking is by writing extremely well-written and high-quality content. Important to note: Google says ‘Expired domains that are purchased and repurposed with the intention of boosting the search ranking of low-quality content are now considered spam.’ Here are some helpful articles for improving your content: Does AI hurt your website? You Don’t Have to be an SEO Expert to Create Trust | EAT formula

What is EAT in SEO? E-A-T stands for expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. These are key factors that Google’s algorithms consider when ranking websites in search results. Google wants to provide its users with the most relevant and trustworthy results, so it looks for websites that have credibility and are written by experts on the topic. So the handy acronym, EAT, is paramount to keep at the forefront of your mind when creating content for your website if you want it to rank well. Now, EAT are not direct ranking factors (such as page speed, keywords etc). Still, they are taken into account when Google “looks” at websites overall and are laid out in Google’s Quality Rater Guidelines. The Google Quality Rater Guidelines are a set of guidelines used by human evaluators, known as “raters,” to assess the quality of search results returned by the Google algorithm. These guidelines provide information on what constitutes high-quality content, how to evaluate the credibility of sources, and how to determine the relevance of a result to a user’s query. The guidelines are used to help ensure that the search results provided by Google are of the highest quality and relevance to users. Expertise refers to the knowledge and skill of the content creators on a particular subject. This can be demonstrated through credentials, education, and experience. Authoritativeness refers to the website’s reputation and influence on the topic it covers. A website widely recognised as a leading source of information on a particular topic is considered more authoritative than a website with less recognition. Trustworthiness refers to the website’s reliability and honesty. This can be demonstrated through transparent business practices, accurate and verifiable information, and security measures to protect users’ privacy. I will say that, in general, it’s important for a website to have high levels of E-A-T in order to rank well in search results and be considered a reliable source of information by Google. But there’s now more to EAT – an extra E In December 2022, there was a google update of guidelines that included an additional part to the acronym: an extra E. Making the full acronym E-E-A-T. This extra E stands for “experience”. Google states the following: ‘Experience: Consider the extent to which the content creator has the necessary first-hand or life experience for the topic. Many types of pages are trustworthy and achieve their purpose well when created by people with a wealth of personal experience. For example, which would you trust: a product review from someone who has personally used the product or a “review” by someone who has not?’ What is trustworthiness in SEO? In the context of search engine optimisation (SEO), trustworthiness refers to the credibility and reliability of a website. Trustworthiness is an important factor that search engines consider when ranking websites in their search results, as it helps to ensure that users are presented with high-quality and reliable sources of information. There are several ways a website can demonstrate trustworthiness to search engines, including having a clean and secure website, having a professional design, having a clear and easily navigable structure, and having high-quality and informative content. Additionally, having a good track record and positive reputation can also help to increase a website’s trustworthiness. How can you achieve trustworthiness for SEO? There are several ways that you can work to increase the trustworthiness of your website for SEO purposes: When creating their SEO content strategy, I always encourage clients to start with decent cornerstone content (before they start blogging about the “fun” stuff) that highlights their proficiency in their field, no matter the industry. Cornerstone content is a term used to describe the most critical and comprehensive content on a website. It is called “cornerstone” content because it serves as the foundation of a website and provides a structure for the rest of the content on the site. Cornerstone content is typically in-depth, well-researched, and evergreen (meaning it will remain relevant for a long time). It is often the website’s main attraction and is designed to be the go-to resource for a particular topic. Examples of cornerstone content might include a detailed guide, an informative video, or a comprehensive review. As an example, some cornerstone content for a copywriter might be an in-depth post about the history of copywriting. This is what Google says about trust: Consider the extent to which the page is accurate, honest, safe, and reliable. The type and amount of trust needed depends on the page, for example: Online stores need secure online payment systems and reliable customer service. Product reviews should be honest and written to help others make informed purchasing decisions (rather than solely to sell the product). Informational pages on clear YMYL topics must be accurate to prevent harm to people and society. Social media posts on non-YMYL topics may not need a high level of trust, such as when the purpose of the post is to entertain its audience and the content of the post does not risk causing harm.’ How can you be an expert in your field for SEO? To be seen as an expert in your field for SEO purposes, you can follow these tips: Essentially, your whole website should be obviously set up to immediately announce what you do and what industry you are in. If you look at my website, my home, about and copywriting services pages, all clearly state my areas of expertise and experience and are optimised for specific industry-related SEO keywords. Then my blog post content solidifies these claims and points towards what I offer professionally. You could still start a blog and rank well without having to work or be an expert in your field, but it’s going to be easier, following the EEAT formula, if you demonstrate your expertise on your website towards your chosen blog topics. For example, if you’re a travel blogger, be sure to include on your home and about pages why you are best placed to talk about the things you will blog about. The same goes if you

Are You Ignoring This One Vital Thing for SEO?

Website speed is one of the key factors in improving your SEO and creating an effortless user experience. ‘In a 2019 survey by Unbounce, nearly 70% of consumers admitted that page speed impacts their willingness to buy from an online retailer.’ ‘The first five seconds of page-load time have the highest impact on conversion rates. (Portent, 2019)’ and ‘website conversion rates drop by an average of 4.42% with each additional second of load time (between seconds 0-5).’ SEMrush declares that page load time is a primary ranking factor. It also effects conversion rate too. ‘A 1-second delay in your site speed can result in a 7% reduction in conversions.’ Why do you need to improve your site speed? There are several reasons why it’s important to improve the speed of a website: How to improve site speed There are many ways to improve the speed of a website. Here are a few general tips: These are just a few general tips to improve the speed of a website. It’s also important to regularly monitor the performance of your website and make adjustments as needed to ensure it remains fast and efficient. See below for tools that can help with this. How do you optimise images for site speed? There are several ways to optimise images for site speed: How many plugins should I use for good site speed? The number of plugins that you should use on your website depends on the specific needs of your site and how well-optimised the plugins are. In general, it’s best to use as few plugins as possible, as each plugin you add to your website can potentially add more code and resources that need to be loaded, which can slow down your website. That being said, there are some plugins that are essential for the functionality of your website and can actually improve the speed of your site. For example, a caching plugin can help speed up your website by storing commonly used resources on the user’s computer, so they don’t have to be downloaded each time the user visits the website. It’s important to carefully evaluate the need for each plugin you are considering using and to only use those that are necessary for the functionality and performance of your website. If you do use multiple plugins, make sure to keep them up to date and optimise them for performance. It’s also a good idea to regularly review the plugins you are using and consider removing any that are no longer necessary or that may be slowing down your website. How do plugins slow your website down? Plugins can slow down a website for a few reasons: By using as few plugins as possible and carefully evaluating the need for each plugin you use, you can help ensure that your website performs well and loads quickly. This is something that trips me up all the time. I love a good plugin, but I tend to overload my site with them and forget to disable those that are no longer working for me. And then my site crashes or takes ages to load. Oops! It’s also important to keep your plugins up to date and to optimise them for performance to ensure that they don’t slow down your website. How do you enable compression on your website? There are a few ways to enable compression on your website: Use a plugin: Many popular content management systems (CMS) have plugins that can enable compression on your website. For example, WordPress has several plugins that can enable Gzip compression, such as W3 Total Cache and Autoptimize. Use mod_deflate: If you are using an Apache web server, you can enable compression by using the mod_deflate module. To do this, you will need to edit the .htaccess file in the root directory of your website and add the following code: <IfModule mod_deflate.c>   # Compress HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Text, XML and fonts AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/javascript   AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/rss+xml AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/vnd.ms-fontobject AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-OpenType   AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-otf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-TrueType AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-font-ttf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/x-javascript AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/xhtml+xml AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE application/XML AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/opentype AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/otf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE font/ttf AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE image/svg+xml   AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE image/x-icon AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/CSS AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/HTML AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/javascript AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/plain AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/XML </IfModule> Use nginx: If you are using an nginx web server, you can enable compression by adding the following code to your nginx.conf file: gzip on; gzip_comp_level 6; gzip_vary on; gzip_min_length 1000; gzip_proxied any; gzip_types text/plain text/CSS application/JSON application/javascript application/x-javascript text/XML application/XML application/xml+rss text/javascript; gzip_buffers 16 8k; These are just a few ways to enable compression on your website. It’s important to note that compression can impact the performance of your server, so it’s essential to carefully consider the trade-offs between increased performance and increased resource usage when enabling compression. What is a content delivery network? A content delivery network (CDN) is a distributed network of servers that delivers web pages and other web content to users based on their geographic location, the origin of the webpage, and the content delivery server. CDNs are used to improve the performance and speed of websites by reducing the distance that data needs to travel between the user and the server and by offloading traffic from the main server. CDNs work by storing copies of a website’s content on servers located in strategic locations around the world. When a user requests content from a website, the CDN will serve the content from the server that is closest to the user, reducing the amount of time it takes for the content to be delivered. CDNs are commonly used by websites that receive a large amount of traffic or that serve users from around the world, as they can help improve the performance and reliability of the website. CDNs can also enhance the security of a website by providing features such as DDoS protection, SSL/TLS encryption, and rate limiting. The Best Website Copywriting Steps

You want more website traffic? More website conversions? More clicks on website advertisements? Then website copywriting is the answer to your website problems! If you’re time poor, skip down to the bottom of this post for my step by step instructions and your FREE TEMPLATE. First of all, website copywriting is the art and science of convincing website visitors to take a certain action. The “action” could be clicking on your website advertisement or visiting your website product page. Whatever you want them to do, it’s up to you! Good website copywriting does two things: grabs attention and persuades readers to take some kind of action. That means we need compelling headlines and content that pulls people in and makes them think “I MUST read more!” We also need good persuasive writing so we convince our readers to click that link or buy that item. Now, let’s talk about what not to do when it comes to website copywriting. The worst website copywriting you can do is to use cheesy, convoluted language that doesn’t make any sense and just rambles on, trying desperately to sound professional but actually sounding like some kind of unhinged person. Another thing not to do is to repeat yourself over and over or write very long paragraphs about one simple point. This does not increase understanding; it just bores the reader. The best website copywriting has a specific goal for your website visitor in mind so you know exactly what you need them to do when they finish reading your article or website page. That means more conversions for you! So take a moment to think, does each of your webpages have a clear process or goal? Can both you and the reader understand what that goal is straight away? Writing website copy is basically storytelling. If you can get people to read your website advertisement or website article, they’re going to remember it better than just some generic rambling about one idea. Let’s go over easy tips for improving website copywriting so that every time someone reads something on your website, they think “I MUST buy this!” How do I write great website copy? Articulate the problem first before proposing a solution because this shows an understanding of what readers want and need. As a general rule, smart brands understand their customers’ needs before attempting to sell them anything, whether that be online or offline, so make sure your website copy reflects this understanding. Write in an active voice, not a passive one because nobody likes things to be done to them; they like things they do! For example, “The website is visited by many people” sounds kind of boring. On the other hand, “People visit the website every day!” is much more exciting and grabs reader’s attention immediately. Make sure that you’re really familiar with your website product or website service before you attempt to sell it to anyone! If you don’t know what makes your website service so great, how are you going to convince other people? That means research time for you. And researching competitors and how people respond to them also. Know who your target audience is so you can write for them directly instead of talking about them in general terms. Yes, website copy is persuasive and yes, website copy needs to be convincing but website copy also needs to accurately represent your website product or website service in a way that makes sense for the people you’re trying to sell it to. Don’t waste time trying to sell to people a completed website when they are really just looking for a book on how to do it themselves. Be concise! Cut out filler words and phrases wherever possible. For example: “Any person who wants this website service” can become simply “Here’s a website service” with no loss of comprehension whatsoever. Avoid overusing website jargon because nobody outside of your industry (or brand) will understand what you mean. If you must use jargon, make sure you explain it in layman’s terms right after so they don’t get lost halfway through your website copy. This can often be done through persuasive sales language, and it’s typically found near what are called conversion points on your website or in emails. Sales funnel copywriting tips Good copywriting knows how to get the readers attention and hold it! Here are some tips on making sure this happens… When you create your sales funnel, to make it work for every person with different needs and wants. Make sure that the landing pages are ready so people will convert into leads. Don’t forget to have a clear call-to-action on each page of your website, including about us and contact information. Otherwise, no one will be able to find out more or buy what they need to move forward in their business goals! Create landing pages and follow up messages based on where visitors enter into the funnel. People who visit during early stages are more likely interested in lowering prices while those at later stages will be looking for free trials or demos. As a general rule. Not always. When creating your sales funnel, be clear about what people need when they land at each point in their journey with you . Sales funnel copywriting is what companies use to persuade their potential customers to make a purchase. This often includes persuasive sales language, and it’s typically found near conversion points on websites or in emails. Conversion points are any touchpoint with the customer where they could potentially click “buy.” For example: an image gallery may have calls-to-action overlaid on individual images so that when someone clicks there, they’ll be taken to the full product page where they can buy directly if desired. People should be given a clear idea on what to expect from your company and its product or service. This is done by presenting the value you provide alongside any limitations in regards to how it will affect them. For example, if someone’s goal is lowering prices, then they may want to know that there are cheaper options out there for competing products. If their main concern is getting a handle on customer traffic patterns, then they would benefit more from benefits related specifically with managing visitors into your funnel than price discounts. You should also consider which stage of the sales process someone enters before sending promotional messages so as not to send too many details about an offer when prospects haven’t even decided whether or not to buy yet; only promote offers once people are hooked! Attention grabbing headlines and subheads that get your prospect’s attention from moment one. Catchy, powerful sentences throughout that compel prospects to continue reading. Framing benefits in language they readily understand (e.g., “saving time” instead of “time saving”) Writing the emotional benefit behind each feature, without sounding too cheesy. A compelling call to action at the end which includes clear instructions on how they can claim the offer, act now or get the product or service that you are offering. You can use curiosity to drive people towards a landing page. This is because, according to statistics, 96 per cent of your site visitors aren’t ready to buy on their first visit. To do this, you should focus more on the commitment aspect by asking for someone’s email address and less about how much the person will spend right now. You have to warm them up a little first! Keep in mind what you’re trying to accomplish with the writing: get them interested enough so they’ll read your headline or click on a link, but not too much detail about an offer when prospects haven’t even decided whether or not to buy yet; only promote offers once people are hooked! How to structure your sales funnel Step one: the bait. This is the first time your prospects know you exist. Step two: they decide to follow you or engage with you a little further. Often this is signing up to your mailing list or engaging in some sort of lead magnet. Step three:

Copywriting Hacks: Better Business with These Simple Tricks

We all want our marketing assets to do better for our business. Generate more leads, talk to more people and seduce more website visitors. But not everyone is a copywriter. That’s why I’ve compiled some easy copywriting hacks that just about anyone can do! Copywriting hack 1: Headlines Use a bold headline to capture attention and sell your product. If the headlines you have, haven’t quite been working, then why not change them up? Be sure to use your SEO keyword and try some stronger language. Since people always just scan web text, hook your readers by using headers to divide sections. This makes it easier for people to find the information that they need and navigate through content. Headers are also handy if you want someone to read a specific part of an article. Copywriting hack 2: Key messages Repeat key messages over and over again in the copy for maximum impact. Find different ways of saying your key message so that your audience will absorb it. The key to writing a successful key message is repetition. You want your readers to be able to remember the message you are trying to get across, so it’s important that they will see and hear your keywords multiple times while reading. Not only should you repeat these words in an article itself but also use them as subheadings throughout. The same principle applies for social media copy and web page copy. Copywriting hack 3: Modify the tone Depending on what your business or service is and who your clearly identified target demographic is, be sure to keep your tone of voice and language conversational so that you sound like a real person instead of just another company talking at people about how great they are all the time. Copywriting hack 4: Change the words The way your brain reacts to textural adjectives is fascinating and is an underused tactic when it comes to copywriting and marketing. Using words like ‘gorgeous,’ ‘rich,’ or ‘delicious’ are not only positive but will also come off as more natural and less forced than other descriptive phrases. A textural adjective is a word that describes something as it feels, tastes, or smells. For example ‘silky,’ ‘lush,’ or ‘smooth.’ Using words like these can be more effective than using adjectives describing colour and shape. So ditch the bland describing words and get more specific. There are four easy to implement copywriting hacks that you can easily try on your existing copy and won’t take you long to do. Give it a go and measure your results. 3 Tips for Getting More Website Traffic: Simple Strategies You Can Try

It can be really frustrating when website traffic is low, and you are not sure what to do about it. There are so many website owners who find themselves in this position. And they don’t know where to start. If that sounds like you, then the good news is that there are plenty of things you can try out! In this article I discuss three simple strategies for getting more website traffic. Tip 1: where is your traffic coming from? The first thing you need to do is think about where your website traffic is currently coming from. A website might have a significant amount of website traffic in the form of links and mentions on other websites but that isn’t necessarily reflective of their online presence. It helps if you can identify what type(s) of website traffic are driving visitors to your site: whether it be links, shares etc. So that you know which channels should be prioritised when trying to increase website traffic. As well as how much time they will require each day (or week). If it’s clear that SEO brings in the majority of your traffic, then you know to spend a fair chunk of your marketing time and budget investing in that and growing it even bigger so that it works for you. Use Google Analytics to ascertain how many people visit your site and when and where they are acquired from. If there seems like too many different sources coming into your website and all roughly bring in an even amount of visitors, then prioritise the channels that you enjoy making content for the most or that you have the most content available for. Eg, if you are a photographer then it’s safe to say that Instagram would be a great platform for you to build on the great visual content you can share. Tip 2: Changes are important The second thing you need to do is take a look at your website and see if there are any changes that could be made in order to optimise the user experience for people coming from different sources. This will help them stay longer on the site so that your SEO will improve. For example, on some websites content does not load as quickly when viewed through mobile devices or Google Chrome compared with other browsers such as Firefox or Safari. Or certain pages will give an error which prevents them from loading entirely. If this sounds like something you’re experiencing too, then try changing how content loads by installing scripts so that speed doesn’t affect website visitors’ ability to view information they were looking for. Google Search Console is another handy tool that will help you work out site speed and user experience details such as how your site looks on mobile. Don’t forget to test website speed to see how fast your site loads before and after making changes. There are plenty of free website speed checkers available. Tip 3: SEO In the third part of this blog post, I will talk about optimising website content for SEO purposes so that visitors stay longer on your website. Which can ultimately lead to higher conversion rates. To do so, you’ll want to make sure that every page has a title tag (or description) with relevant keywords in it; include meta descriptions as well if possible; and use headings and subheadings throughout the text. Additionally, writing unique content from scratch (try using my blog post template) is always better than copying or aggregating information found elsewhere online because it helps search engines identify what your website should rank for more easily. To recap, this article has discussed three fundamental strategies for getting more website traffic. The first thing you need to do is think about where your website traffic is currently coming from (and build on that), the second thing you need to do is take a look at any changes that could be made in order to optimise user experience and finally, SEO which will help visitors stay longer on your site. There are plenty of free tools available such as Google Search Console or Google Analytics which can give information on how long people visit your site and what type(s) of source drives them there. Why You Need a Professional to Create Your Brand’s Tagline

A brand tagline is one of the most important marketing tools for a brand. It’s what people think about when they see your brand and it can help them decide whether or not to buy your product. Your brand tagline should embody everything that you want your brand to be known for. However, if you’re like many small business owners who are in charge of coming up with their own brand taglines, then you may tempted to come up with your own. And just because you think it’s a catchy pun or play on words, doesn’t mean it is a powerful tagline to help solidify your brand and speak to your customers. Your brand tagline should embody everything that you want your brand to be known for. Your brand is a representation of your company’s identity and what it offers to its customers. You cannot just use any old words for your brand tagline, you need one that will not only convey the right message about your brand but also build an emotional connection with the customer. Professional brand copywriters know exactly how to do this! If you are tired of trying in vain to craft a memorable brand tagline on your own, hire a professional freelance copywriter who can help get those creative juices flowing and take care of all the hard work for you. Brand copywriting experts have great minds (if I do say so myself) when it comes to crafting messages that engage people emotionally. Something most entrepreneurs struggle with because they don’t specialise in marketing like these pros do! Below, I discuss why it’s so important to hire a professional to come up with the perfect brand slogan for you and why doing so could make all the difference between success and failure for your brand. Hiring a professional brand tagline creator is necessary for these reasons: It’s important to hire someone who understands how brand slogans work and what they’re supposed to do because you don’t want your brand slogan to go unappreciated by customers. You need professionals in order to produce brand slogans that are unique and offer a competitive edge in the marketplace. There’s no point having something similar to most of the taglines out there. You need professionals to come up with brand taglines because it’s difficult for you to do so on your own without any experience or knowledge of branding. Other people might steal your brand’s tagline if you don’t protect it properly. You might miss out on valuable SEO opportunities. You need to brand your website with a brand tagline that’s unique, memorable and strong. Hiring professionals is the only way you’ll be able to create something powerful in time for your new business or website launch. Brand slogans are integral pieces when it comes to branding because they set up an image of what people should expect from your brand; customers will feel more loyal if they have a connection with them. A brand tagline can help people easily identify who you are or what idea you represent so make sure not to miss out on this opportunity by trying to do it yourself without professional assistance! Overall, the tagline has to speak directly to your target demographic, evoke the right sentiments and increase your branding proposition, not detract from it. The brand tagline is the one thing that will stick with people whenever they see your brand. It’s what they think about when they see your product, website or other branding and can help them decide whether or not to buy from you. You may not want to spend the initial outlay of a professional copywriter but getting it right from the start is the most incredible investment. Plus, if you ever sell your business or brand, investing in a professional tagline as an asset will only increase its value. With a professional brand copywriter on hand, crafting something powerful won’t be a headache anymore!

Copywriting for generation X

Generation X are people who are 38 to 53 years old in 2019. And, as a target demographic, when it comes to copywriting and marketing, they are ripe for the “attacking”. Generation X in Australia are known as the ‘forgotten generation’ and aren’t as noisy or given as much attention as all the other generations, particularly when it comes to marketing. Which is silly because once you onboard them as customers, they are ridiculously loyal. So marketers and brands are doing themselves a disservice by not creating and marketing products to them.  They like to research a lot and are keen information sharers amongst their friends, colleagues and family. Which means, they are going to Google the heck out of your brand and compare your product or service to your competitors long before they make a decision. But, like I mentioned above, once they have made a decision, they are highly likely to be brand loyal.  Although the most brand loyal out of all the generations, they are still constantly seeking value for money and convenience at stores such as Big W, Aldi and Target. 70 per cent of generation X want brands to make their lives simpler and more convenient because many just want more time with the family and more “me time”. They want to create more time so they can spend with family and have an active hands on role in parenting How generation X live and work It’s incredibly important to them to spend time with their family. Constant seekers of the elusive work/life balance, they are hard workers and live by the motto ‘work hard, play hard.’ Generation X, are big into planning and considers hard work just part of being human. ‘Gen X was also ranked highest among fellow workers for having the strongest work ethic’ and we can generally find them in middle management in professional fields.  So, if you are marketing products or services, consider using experiences and family orientated activities to appeal to their leisure preferences as well as rewards for career related achievements and acknowledge how hard they work.  What they believe Generation X also believe in being grateful for the opportunities they have in life, that may not have been afforded to generations before them. They believe that higher education is crucial to their success yet they are quieter and humbler about their achievements because would rather fly under the radar. Generation X values include: honesty transparency trust resourcefulness independence self sufficiency quality time (with self, friends and family). So it’s crucial you think about these values when you market to them. How can your business show that you are the most trustworthy? How can you allow this demographic to be more self sufficient when accessing your offerings? Generation X want a brand that: they can be highly loyal to makes their life simpler and more convenient genuinely earns their trust reassures and supports (before after and during their purchasing journey) offers less overt sales techniques (no pushy sales tricks for this generation) are ethical and eco conscious and that do good for the world nurtures their lifestyle (think subscription services for the home). Furthermore, it’s really important to connect with this generation that you create copywriting that is positioning situations as real world and relatable, rather than highly aspirational (which, say, millennials respond to). ‘Nielsen reports that both men and women of Generation X are drawn to TV Advertisements that showcase everyday life and real-world situations. Generation X women in particular enjoy sentimental ads that focus on family life. Appeal to Gen Xers by rooting conversations in real-world possibilities.’ Some words that can enhance your copywriting targeting generation X are: trustworthy relaxing family convenient consistency reliable “me time” fuss free resourceful truthful work hard rewarding independence balance no nonsense clean eco friendly Some of generation X’s favourite brands include: Amazon Netflix Android Hershey If you want more information like this, grab a copy of my book Potent: improve your website with effortless copywriting.

Why should website copywriting answer questions?

Major search engines like Google have grown from being a simple way to navigate to a doorway to boundless knowledge. As a result of this, the number of search requests that are question related are rapidly increasing, making solutions focused website copywriting more critical than ever. There are three main reasons why your website copywriting needs to address a user’s question and problems. If you’re providing solutions based copy, then it: is better for SEO improves your bounce rate provides more credibility and trust. A 2017 Jumpshot study published on Moz predicted that approximately eight per cent of search queries are phrased as questions. This may not look like a significant figure but Internet Live Stats suggests that people made around 3.5 billion searches per day in 2018 and this figure is only going up. Questions in SEO search terms As a real life example, let’s take a related topic using some of the leading SEO search software available.  The SEO search term ‘how to improve my website ranking’ had a higher search volume of 70 (average number of times it has been searched) with a 100 per cent click potential (the likelihood that people will click on your link should it rank high enough). Similarly, ‘how do i improve seo on my website’ (search volume of 50) whereas ‘improve my website’ has a search volume of 20. This keyword data shows us that people are searching more question based terms for this particular example (and likely many others), specifically 350 per cent more enquiries.  That means if you aren’t factoring in question based SEO keywords into your website content, then you could be missing out on a whole heap of searchers who are specifically looking for the answers you can directly provide.  … if you aren’t factoring in question based SEO keywords into your website content, then you could be missing out on a whole heap of searchers… Answer the question Even more important than including question based terms, is actually being able to answer them in clear, concise wording. If someone visits your site and isn’t able to glean the answer they are searching for, they will leave your site no matter how great your web design is. This may seem like an obvious thing to keep on top of but it goes much deeper than that. It points to an aspect of SEO known as bounce rate. Your bounce rate is how long a user stays on your webpage (not website) before leaving. The shorter their stay, the less authority your site has and vice versa.  A bounce rate signifies the visit quality of your site and if you are getting a high bounce rate, that is an obvious indication that what you have on your website is not relevant to what viewers are searching for.  Neil Patel, one of the world’s SEO experts, has suggested that the average bounce rate is around 40 per cent. However, this average is different for each industry and function of your site. For example, targeted retail sites can expect an average of 20 to 40 per cent bounce rate.  This is where relevant website copywriting is of the utmost importance. Good copy will engage, inform, educate and promote at the same time. This ensures that your readers spend more time on your page, boosting your search visibility. Credibility Perhaps the most central thing to consider is the level of credibility and trustworthiness you are offering a potential new customer or client. ‘80 per cent of users say that being able to trust the information on a site is very important to them as they decide to visit a website.’ If you have misled them to your website without providing genuine information and solutions, they are going to easily dismiss your services and likely not return. Directly answering a searcher’s question or addressing their problem will build trust, which is the ‘cornerstone to all customer experiences.’ But it’s not just the website that people are trusting, this lack of trust could also extend to your whole brand if you are not careful. ‘Eighty-one percent say, “Trust in brands is an important part of my purchase behaviour.” The best way to answer questions Website copywriting focuses on creating familiar triggers that your readers can quickly identify with while emphasising different aspects of your product or service. It does this by finding, highlighting and solving a problem, even if the reader doesn’t know they had that problem in the first place. This is often known as the PAS formula and it stands for: problem agitate solve Problem The first step involves introducing and identifying a problem that your reader has using familiar triggers. For example, if you’re a small business owner a problem may be that you need a website but don’t have the time to create one. Staggeringly, 50 per cent of small businesses in Australia do not have a website. And of that number, 17 per cent they don’t have time to build or manage one.  Immediately, we can identify and highlight the problem which is that making a website is too time consuming. Agitate Next, we identify their most significant pain point and provide examples or ask questions to agitate it. The goal here is to make your readers realise the solution even before you point it out, providing the reader with more sense of control. The more specific you can be, the more effective. In the example above, there’s an opportunity to use emotive language such as exhausted, time pressured, worried, frazzled etc. And you can push the points of what they are missing out on by spending time worrying about the website or spending time creating the website (eg, not home in time to see the kids before their bedtime). For example, ‘Are you too constantly frazzled to get your website up and running?’ Solution Finally, after you’ve stirred the pot sufficiently and made them anticipate the solution you’re offering, it’s time to hand it over on a silver platter. For example, ‘get a custom website built

How to use the Yoast plugin for meta tags

Now that you have installed the Yoast plugin and have written your website content, follow along the step by step instructions below to input your meta tags into your WordPress site. I find that I only need the free version of this WordPress plugin for most websites. You might like to experiment with the paid premium version, depending on your needs. Premium is great if you are beginner at SEO and need extra guidance or you have a complex site that you want to start streamlining. At the bottom of your web page or blog post you will see some fields to fill in.  Step one Fill out the focus keyphrase field with just that. You would have already worked out the primary SEO keyword or phrase in your SEO research and content planning phase. Step two Secondly, fill in the SEO title section, like I have below. If the line underneath is orange, that indicates that there are not enough words in their to have optimum impact. Technically, it doesn’t matter if you use sentence case (capital letter at start of sentence only) or title case (every word capitalised). I have experimented with both and haven’t seen any results either way but you might like to use title case for ease of reading, Step three Insert your slug in the designated field. Seperate each word with a hyphen and be sure to include your keyword. If you don’t fill this out manually, the slug will automatically become the title of your post. Step four Finally, include a meta data description of up to 160 characters (this can change because it’s based on character width these days instead of character count). Remember to make the description like a little sales blurb of why someone should read your page. Step five Once you’ve filled in the Yoast fields, you can have a look at how the snippet will show up in Google (if Google decides to index it). It will look like this, once all put together: If you want to go a step further you can go through the checklist under SEO analysis which will tell you how you can improve your SEO for that post or webpage. An even further step is to improve the readability. But as I’ve mentioned in How to use meta tags in WordPress, please take this with a pinch of salt. Now you can input your meta tags into WordPress using the Yoast plugin and expect to see some improvements in the way your SEO is structured and priortised.
